Christian Heinrich Spiess (1755–1799) was a German actor and writer. Born the son of a pastor, he abandoned his academic studies for the life of the stage. He wrote numerous plays, but is best remembered for his novels which featured ghosts, robbers and knights, and which were hugely popular during his lifetime. His plays include Die drei Töchter (1782), Maria Stuart (1783), and Klara von Hoheneichen (1792). Noteworthy among his works of fiction are Der alte Überall and Nirgends (1792), Die Löwenritter (1794), and the great Gothic novel Das Petermännchen (1793).
